Team Solid Gold Reigns Over Seward Park

Four Chicago Basketball Players Crowned Champions of Red Bull Reign

Chicago (July 26, 2014) – Chicago native and NBA superstar, Anthony Davis, played host to the inaugural Red Bull Reign three-on-three basketball tournament today with 32 teams competing.  With an audience of nearly 2500 people throughout the day, Seward Park saw some of the best local ballers put their skills to the test in a ten-hour, high-endurance tournament.  In the end it was Solid Gold who reigned over the competition.

The last three rounds of play were staged on the main court, which was constructed to mimic an in-door facility with a wooden floor and stadium bleachers. “I usually don’t play outside so to see Red Bull put a wood court down for the finals really made this tournament different.” said winning team member, De’Andre Thomas.

The road to victory was grueling, as the final eight teams each played ten games in pool play just to make it to the quarterfinals.  After topping We Them Boyz in a 14-7 victory, Solid Gold had a hard-fought battle with Terror Squad just edging them out 16-13 to make it into the finals.  It was No Days Off who pushed their way past Bucket Boys (15-8) and Heart Squad (15-12) to also make it to the finals.  The last match up of the night was tough, but Solid Gold jumped out to a fast start with a 5-1 run.  No Days Off came back with two back-to-back jump shots outside of the arch, however they were no match for the high-flying guys of Solid Gold, as they capped off the day with a 12-5 victory.

The winning team was constructed of two Slashers; Emmanuel Little and Al Stewart, Point Guard, JaMarcus Ellis and Big Man, De’Andre Thomas.   “Red Bull did such a good thing for Chicago hosting this tournament.  It was a long day (10am – 10pm), and it kept so many people off of the streets and brought everyone together.” said Solid Gold team member, Emmanuel Little.

Preceding the final game, local rapper and Red Bull Sound Select artist, Saba performed and Anthony Davis judged the Slam Dunk Contest.  It was Billy Rush’s 360 reverse jam that earned him the Slam Dunk title.  When asked his thoughts on the day, Billy said, “It was good to compete against the other guys, I like getting to do what I love and have fun!”

Red Bull Reign brought together 128 basketball players from various neighborhoods to share their passion for the game of basketball.  Alderman Walter Burnett Jr came out to say hello and thanked the crowd for coming out, “It is so great to see all of these people from various neighborhoods coming together for this free tournament, thank you Red Bull and Seward Park for making this possible.”   The winning team will receive a once-in-a-lifetime basketball experience courtesy of Red Bull in Las Vegas to watch professional basketball all-star and Red Bull athlete Anthony Davis play with the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, in addition to qualification for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Masters in Chicago this August.
